Locally-Made

We love being able to offer you locally-made goods.  We have adorable bibs, burp rags, loveys, dresses, soaps, lotions, knit hats, aprons, pocket diapers, diaper covers and more made right here in Wisconsin.  Some even made right here in Neenah!  The baked goods in our cafe (dessert breads, biscotti, brownies) are made by hand from scratch by a local baker who uses only USA-made ingredients.

As a small home-grown company, we are firm-believers in supporting local businesses!  Especially our own……..  You have asked for more locally-made goodies and we want to deliver!  We want to know what you make from home.  Do you sew?  Kint?  Bead?  Applique?  Felt?  Know someone who does?  Email us at info@momandpopplace.com to talk about whether your creations would be a fit for Mom and Pop Place!

Second Best Night of My Life*

I have a totally gratuitious blog entry for you today.  It’s not about Mom and Pop Place or parenting, but it’s my blog.  So I’m gonna write about me.  Take that.

My next-door neighbor is in a band and I’ve heard them play some Dave Matthews Band stuff.  In my opinion, it’s just not Dave Matthews Band without a fiddle.  Which I (gratuitiously) mentioned to my neighbor.  He said they had a gig set up at Northshore Country Club a couple weeks later.  Did I want to sit in?  Um, yes, I wanted to sit in.  I was dying to rock that fiddle.

Did you know Fender makes electric violins?  I didn’t either until I went to Island Music.  I was desperate for something that could be heard over the singer, lead guitar, bass, drumset, horn, sax, and keyboard of my neighbor’s band.  That’s some serious noise.  Anyway, I “accidentally” bought the Fender electric violin and joined the band.

We had our first gig last Saturday for 220 people at Northshore Country Club.  We played outside so, if you remember the weather from last Saturday, the gig involved occasional tarps and mad dashes to the clubhouse.  You can see water marks on the knees of my jeans from climbing up and down from the stage.  But, we rocked, in my “humble” opinion.  And I didn’t fall off the stage.  I did trip on a cord, but the sax player was there to catch me. (Thanks, Mark.)

So, now I gotta say: You need a fiddle in your band.  That’’s a statement, not a question.  I’ll be waiting for your call.

PS: Thanks Bill Eisenbarth.

Kellymom

I want to share one of my favorite websites with you.  Have you checked out www.kellymom.com?  It’s  a breastfeeding and parenting site dedicated to providing evidence-based information to parents and professionals.  The site is not fancy or commercial, it’s just good.  I reference it even more than the La Leche League site.  Whenever I have a question about breastfeeding, I know I can find info on kellymom.  From tandem nursing and herbs to pumping and safe sleep, you’ll find it.   Check it out!

Look mom, no hands!

simplewishesApparently, it is hand-free breastpumping season.  Maybe, like me, you didn’t get the memo.  But, I have had a huge run on the hands-free bustier that allows you to use a breastpump without your hands.  We have sold about 6 in the last week, after going several months without selling many.  We actually have a new hand-free bustier in stock.  It’s the Simple Wishes Bustier (pictured at right).  I like it better than the one we had before.  It has more adjustability in the back and between the breasts.  Plus, it’s pink and cute and the same price.  We ‘re gong to be phasing out the previous product and switching over to the Simple Wishes.

Memo to creative people out there: there has to be a more elegant way of hands-free pumping.  Can you come up with a solution?  Right now, the only options are an unwieldy halter top you zip over your other bra or a special pump that costs $80 more than the other pumps.  There must be a more elegant solution.  We can put a man on the moon but we can’t find a way for mom to pump her breasts while she drinks a cup of coffee?  Come on.

Paintings For Sale

GageysaleHere’s my little guy busy at work at his Art Stand.  He was inspired by our neighbors, who hosted a successful Lemonade stand last week.  He and his brother sat in the yard and watched cars stop and give the neighbors money for lukewarm Kool-Aid.  It seemed like magic.  Money for nothing?!   My kids like money.  They instantly started begging to have a sale themselves.  Kool-Aid was not an option: we don’t have any Kool-Aid.  They wanted to sell their broken toys: that seemed less than classy to me.

I wanted to come up with something that actually helped them understand entrepreneurship.  Selling broken toys (that technically belonged to ME) didn’t teach them much about the marketplace.  So I suggested they create something on their own to sell.  My oldest son immediately lost interest.  He’s not my most imaginitive.  That’s ok.  But Gage, my youngest son, was captivated.  He immediately set to work with watercolors and glitter glue and created over 15 works of art.  He’s an amazing artist, if I do say so myself.  I just love to watch him as he loses himself in the worlds he creates in his artwork.  He loves it.  People say to him “Maybe you’ll be an artist when you grow up.”  He always replies the same way.  Gives them a  puzzled look and says “I’m already an artist.”

So, Gage set up his stand and started offering his art to passers-by.  He thought 10 cents was a fair price.  I talked him up to 25 cents.  He sold about 8 paintings the first evening.  He sat out there for almost 2 hours, looking expectantly at each car that passed.  I couldn’t stop watching him from the window.  Pretty soon, my oldest son started to wonder just what he had passed up.  He tried to go sell a handful of Matchbox cars alongside his brother.  But, the creativity conoisseurs in our neighborhood weren’t interested in Matchbox cars.  They know art when they see it.
